NERINGA AND CURONIAN SPIT
Distance from Klaipeda - 45 km. Neringa is a narrow spit of land running from Klaipeda to nearly as far as Kaliningrad (former Konigsberg) in what was used to be known as Eastern Prussia. The Neringa Peninsula is in fact just a hairline of beach, forest, road and, occasionally, wooden houses, separating the Baltic Sea from Kursiu Marios lagoon.
A legend tells us that it was not always like this. Years and Years ago there was no spit. The people who suffered most because of this were fishermen who would go info the high seas. A girl - giant Neringa living on the sea shore nearby pities the fishermen and thought of a way to help the people. She took an apron - full of sand and emptied it over the sea, thus creating a lagoon, separated from the sea by a sandy spit.
Nowadays Neringa is one of most popular and prestigious recreation areas in Lithuania, its unique nature with sand dunes, pine forests and golden beaches attracting thousands of holiday - makers every year.
