Estonia has a long coastline as well as many lakes and rivers. Everyone has the right to fish recreationally so long as they have the proper fishing permit. People may fish without needing a permit if they are only using a simple hand line which consists of a rod and line not more than 1.5 times the length of the rod, a single hook, float and sinkers. However, if a spinning reel is used you need to purchase a temporary permit. The form and price of a fishing permit is the same throughout Estonia. Prices of fishing permits are related to their validity. A fishing permit is personal and non-transferable. It can be purchased at any county Environmental Department.
1. Pidula Kalakasvatus (Saaremaa)
The fish-breeding is situated in Saaremaa, near the road of Kihelkonna-Orissaare, on the left shore of Pidula stream at Pidula`s Old Mill. It was built in 1935 by Saaremaa Fishing Union to increase marena in Saaremaa`s shelf sea.
In 1991 reorganised the fishing kolkhoz to joint-stock company, who started to stop fish-breeding. In June 1992 ex workers made up the AS Baltic Sea Food. Finnish helped them. And this rented the fishing kolkhoz for 15 years. In Pidula`s section they continued to multiply trout and raise young fishes, also incubated sea trout`s and marena`s grubs. The fish pack consisted trout of Donaldson, but material to set up was taken also from Finland too. At the end of 1996 the Baltic Sea Food got bankrupt. In February 1992 the similar business was created. It was named OÜ "Saare Fish-breeding". And this enterprise brought fish grub in again from Denmark. For now the firm is eliminated. From January 2000. OÜ "Carlepol2 rents the Pidula mill-pond and 20 concrete pools. They also take part in fishing tourism. The incubate house of Pidula and 3 ponds with the whole area 5,1 ha belong to MTÜ Pidula since Sept. 1998, who uses whose to braise marena`s roes and to grow young fishes. It is financed by Saaremaa fishing foundation corresponding to the contract. The roe is gathered from the shelf sea of Ruhnu, 20-24 l in a year.
